Discovering Chachapoays combines the archaeological and natural sites of the region of Amazonas in northern Peru, but most importantly, it allows you to understand the traditions and culture of the Chachapoyas people from the interior. You will sleep in guest rooms and in homestay and experience the reality of life in the mountains.
You will meet local artists, artisans and farmers to immerse yourself in their daily lives and participate in traditional activities. Of course, you will not miss the emblematic sites of the region.

Detailed itinerary
Day 1 – Arrival at Chachapoyas Airport, Huancas and Chachapoyas, transfer to Nogalcucho
Our driver will be waiting for you at Chachapoyas Airport with a sign with your name on it.
You would head straight to the village of Huancas, 15 minutes from Chachapoyas Airport. Huancas is very famous for its women ceramicists and you will participate in a demonstration of their art. Then you will walk to the Sonche Canyon from where you have a 360° view of the valley.
From Huancas you will pass by the Miradores to arrive at Chachapoyas. Time for lunch.
You will then visit this beautiful colonial town with your English-speaking guide before meeting Gerald, a local artisan who creates objects in nogal (a type of nut). He will explain the process of production of the nut until the final object.
Finally you will leave for the one-hour trip to Nogalcucho.
Arrived at Perico’s, you will settle into your room before leaving for a tour of the property with Perico who explains the reforestation work he does as well as their quest for self-sufficiency.
Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2 Visit of the Mummy museum in Leymebamba and vivencial activities
This morning you will leave with your driver and your private English-speaking guide for the village of Leymebamba (approximately 45 minutes).
You will start the visit of Leymebamba with a visit to the Mummies Museum where you will learn all about the history of the Chachapoya civilization, but also about the rescue of the mummies and relics found at the Laguna de los Condores and the construction of the Museum. Then you will join Eli’s family where you learn to make tamales. You will finally have the pleasure of tasting them with the family.
The afternoon you will spend with the artist Miguel Huaman, the sculptor who made the replicas that you saw at the Museum in the morning. He will show you his technique and you can paint a mini sarcophagus yourself that you will take with you as a souvenir.
Return to the ACP Milpuj in the late afternoon.
Day 3 Explore the citadel of Kuelap
Today you will leave your hosts and set off for a 15-minute drive to the village of Tingo from where you will take the cable car to the Citadel of Kuelap, the Machu Picchu of the north in the Amazonas region.
Once you reach La Malca, you walk about 2 km to the Kuélap complex, built from AD 400 onwards. Visit of around 2 hours, explanation of the administrative, military and ceremonial nature of Kuélap, the peculiarities of the almost 500 round houses on a 6 ha site at an altitude of 3000 m. End of the visit and descent by cable car for lunch in the village of Tingo.
Then transfer to Cocachimba.
Day 4 Gocta waterfall hike
This morning, accompanied by your guide, you will leave for the six hour hike (round trip) to the Gocta waterfall. The path goes through the forest and with a bit of luck you may see a Gallito de las Rocas, the national bird of Peru.
Note: If you are not big hikers, you can request a horse for part of the way. On the other hand, the last two km (two km one way, but also return) must be done on foot.
Return to the hotel to enjoy the view and a little rest.
Day 5 Return to Chachapoyas airport
Depending on your flight schedule, you will leave in the morning for your return flight to Lima from Chachapoyas airport. Your driver will accompany you.
